Veterans Day

“In order that a grateful Nation might pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this Nation… let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower, October 8, 1954
My mother wore army boots.
I’ve never been prouder.
Mom, from your caboose child and a grateful nation:
Thank you for your service.

Love this post, JAS! …and yes, you have every reason to be proud. Thanks from me, too.
Thanks for this. We don’t see enough of these kind of things, and their generation is often too modest to speak of them.
My grandfather left home at 19, never having seen water larger than a small pond, to join the Navy. What an experience! God bless them and all their compatriots.

I would love to know more about your mother’s service with the 42nd General Hospital. My aunt, Catherine (Cack) O’Neil, was also a nurse with the 42nd in WWII. Unfortunately, we know almost nothing of her time there as she very infrequently talked about it. I wonder if your mother remembers her?
Marty, I contacted you via the email you left - Catherine O’Neil was my mother’s roommate while they were in the 42nd! Please leave me another comment with an email address if you do not receive an email from me at the address you left here with this comment.
